Liars & Thieves: Inadequacy

Judi Allen described the liar of inadequacy in a way that resonated with me in Liars and Thieves. She wrote that inadequacy whispers to us of our deficiencies–what we are lacking–pointing out all the ways we are not and can not.

Have you every been attacked by thoughts of being not good enough? I have. I work in an industry that is known for causing people to develop “imposter syndrome.” It is one of the most insidious parts of higher education–especially at the graduate level–and I work hard each day to prepare my students to fight this lie.

But I am not always so proactive in my personal life. I get the whispers of not being a good enough wife, mom, daughter, etc. just as much as the next person. I was grateful for this reminder in the study that “silencing and vanquishing this liar requires focusing on Who our God, is rather than who we are.” Indeed the more I focus on what God has done–can do–and will do through me, the quieter those whispers get.

One of the verses offered in this day of the study was 2 Corinthians 4:7–

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. –2 Corinthians 4:7 (ESV)

Indeed we are like fragile jars of clay, but isn’t it exciting that God wants to display His amazing power through us?!

Display

Rather than hide behind our shortcomings, God calls us to be bold and fearless and transparent–to walk out into the world each day using the gifts He has empowered us with to bring Him glory and to call others into His kingdom. The reason why the enemy attacks us with whispers of inadequacy is so that we’ll sit on our gifts. He invites us to reflect on our not-good-enoughs so we’ll spend more time hiding our light at home or at work rather than shining bright.

We can’t fall for the lie of inadequacy, we must display who God is and what He is miraculously doing through us.
