Day 1: Prayer/Affirmation

I carry you in my spirit. I pray for you more than I pray for myself. –from Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman

What if every day I prayed for my husband more than I prayed for myself? I have been convicted in more than one season of my marriage that I wasn’t praying enough. I have to stay on my knees for my husband. I have seen how powerful prayer can be in our marriage. Prayer sustained us through moving away from everyone that we knew. Prayer carried us through tremendous loss. Prayer kept us connected when we were a part due to work about 10 weeks last year. Yet even knowing that, I recognize that sometimes I get stuck in a surface “bless my husband, amen” routine.

I’m grateful for the new energy that God has breathed into my prayer life to start this year. The “one little word” the Lord has given me this year is PRAY, so I couldn’t imagine starting a journal for my marriage with anything other than prayer!

One of my favorite books on prayer is The Power of a Praying Wife. Stormie Ormartian models prayers on a variety of topics in this book (praying his career, his physical health, his fears, etc.), but she begins with a prayer wives can pray for themselves. I love this prayer and return to it often to pray versions of it. For me, praying about being a wife puts in perspective that I am not going to God in prayer to “fix” my husband or his problems, but to hold him up and love him through prayer.

Today, I’m journaling prayers but as this book grows, I will include some more affirmations and vision statements for our marriage as well.

How are you praying for your spouse today? I’d love to hear about it! Share your thoughts in the comments here or via social media using #WriteLoveChallenge!

Bonus Challenge–Pray out loud over your spouse today or ask them, “How can I best pray for you this week?”
